Ha, the title reminds me of an old song 'Love Potion #9'; of course, most of you young things won't even know what I'm referring to!!
Following a trail of crumbs from Moogies World on over to Blog Fodder the question/topic of the week is :
Name a sensory input(s) which trigger a mood change be it uplifting, depressing, poignancy or remind you of a past event or period in time. Examples - the smell of an aftershave or perfume, a song, a baby crying, the sound of a vegas slot machine, the feel of clean sheets, the taste of a childhood drink.
One of the smells that triggers happy memories for me is the smell of salt water. I think some of the happiest days of my life (as a child, anyway) were spent on or near the Gulf of Mexico at the southernmost tip of Louisiana. I cherish the time I spent with my Dad, fishing for red snapper, trawling for shrimp or just meeting the boat as she came into the dock for the evening.
I remember my sister and I being sent out into the back yard with a large bowl and a burlap bag of fresh oysters that we were to shuck so Mom could fry them for supper. Chances are I ate more as I shucked than I ever ate fried!
I remember big 'shrimp boils' on Sundays; long tables lined with newspapers and boiled shrimp poured out down the middle. All you had to do was grab a seat and start peeling.
The salty taste of tears brings sadness for things and people lost. A childhood home lost to a hurricane and the loss of both my Mom and my Dad, just a few of the things to bring sadness. Loss of health can be thrown in, along with lost chances that can never be taken.
So I'll live in the day I'm in, savor the good and try to ignore the bad. How is it the old saying goes, "If life gives you lemons, make lemonade." or something along that line. Pass the pitcher and lets have a drink or two!
