Arne Duncan, My Hero!

In this article at CNN, Arne Duncan, the Cabinet secretary who's role it is to overhaul the American education system, advocates keeping kids in school longer to boost academic achievements.

"It doesn't matter how poor, how tough the family background, socioeconomic challenges," Duncan said. "Where students have longer days, longer weeks, longer years -- that's making a difference."

This guy is my new American Hero!!! 

The Epazudic

I wonder how many times in one month a person can have this epazudic that has plagued me??

This is the third time this month I've had to carry a box of tissues with me from room to room, drink cough syrup like water (actually that part of it ain't too bad!), and generally feel like I've been run over by a Mac truck!

I keep getting better, then the chitlins come home from school with something else and here we go all over again!

I've been trying to sort through so much junk on my computer and have actually found some things that I thought I had lost when my computer crashed the last time.

I found, for instance, this picture I took in Japan a few years ago. With the magic of Photoshop, I removed all the color and then put back just the orange color of the gateway at this small shrine.  I thought it came out interesting,,,

Free Pancakes at IHOP

Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products…hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.

IHOP serves a free short stack of pancakes tomorrow! I know where we'll be!!

Expired License!

I had another birthday earlier this month; actually I only have one each year, so I'm done with birthdays for this year!

I knew my driver's license expired in 2009, but it didn't dawn on me that this was 2009. Well duh!

Waiting now for the big yellow machine to spit out the kindergarten chitlin so we can make a trip to the DMV and get my new mug shot,,,

Winter Blahs,,,

they get even the best of us here in the Midwest down sometimes!  One day the sun is shining and the temperature is at least above freezing, the next day the snow is ass deep to a tall giraffe!

Colds and flu have been circulating through the homes and schools.  The bad part about getting sick (other than being sick) is what you have to catch up on once you get better!! Kids survive on hubby's limited cooking skills or whatever is available in the fast-food drive through.  I've learned that it really doesn't matter if the dishes are neatly packed into the dishwasher as long as they are clean when the cycle is completed!

The mountains of laundry, though will not magically disappear with a wink or a wish.  Like everything else, it gets done, one bite at a time!  

And The Wind Blew,,,

Man, what a stormy ride the weather has given us in the last two weeks.  A little over a week ago our yard/street looked like this...

Last night, after a couple of days of warm weather, the wind tore through the fields at about 55 mph, snapping off one of the trees across the street and down into the road.

 

For the second time in 5 months, our next door neighbor is putting the shingles back on his roof!!       All is fine here on our little homestead (knock on wood!).  Although the wind rattled the glass in the windows and opened and closed the damper in the fireplace, we are still all in one piece (so far).
