Winter Storm Warning

We are currently under a 'winter storm warning' for the next two days!

I've lit the incense and prayed to the snow gods that we don't get snowed in with no school buses able to make it down the road to transport the little darlings to school!!

In fact, a group of us living on our backwoods road are thinking about investing in a new mode of transportation to deliver the chitlins to school,,,

Fresh Herbs

While this lovely lady gathered the last of the love apples from her backyard, I've beenbabying a crop of fresh herbs, hoping that they will be ready for consumption in the next month!

If you take a glance out of the window, beyond the greenery, you will see the ground blanketed in a pure white substance known as snow (some may call it different names, depending on if you are just looking at it or trying to shovel it away so you can get your car out of the driveway!).

A blanket of snow also insures that the temperatures stay low!  It was -15 degrees F (outside) this morning when I convinced myself to leave the warmth of my cozy bed.  No school for the kiddos today, so we got to sleep in an extra 20 minutes this morning!  The sun is shining and it's up to -12 degrees right now, with a forecasted high of +2.  A heat wave is expected tomorrow,,,highs to be in the low teens or maybe even +20! It could be worse, though; we could live in Wisconsin closer to this lady where it's even colder! 

Stimulating the Economy

We did our level best to stimulate the economy in this little section of the country by completing a shopping trip yesterday for clothes and shoes for growing kids.

Actually we found everything we were looking for and it was all ON SALE!!  I don't mean just a small price cut, but new, name brand clothing at a fraction of the original cost. I've seen used clothes on ebay that cost more than some of the items we bought.

For instance, we had to buy the 10-year-old, who decided to have a growth spurt in the middle of the school year, new jeans that were regularly priced at $34.99 on sale and marked down to $8.99 a pair!  If I didn't think he'd take off and grow some more, I would have bought more than the five pair we bought.  It'll be my luck he'll wear the same size pants now for more than a year and I'll kick myself for not getting more! *L*

It was a little weird, though; usually the mall on a Sunday afternoon is a bit crowded. Not so yesterday, though.  Have you been shopping lately?  Is it just me, or is no one spending any money? (Before you send me hate mail, no I don't have money to burn!)

More Shopping!

It looks like today will have to be a shopping day, much as I detest the idea of even driving to the mall much less going in to buy something!

The 10-year-old's school pants all are either a) and inch too short all of a sudden or b) have holes in the knees.  Why oh why can't they do all their growing in the summer instead of in the middle of the school year?? I've scoured ebay but there's not much available for tall and skinny!

The 5-year-old's clothes still fit; how much growth can a kid do that only eats 3 beans at a time or 1/4 of a peanut butter sandwich?  Problem is, her feet continue to get longer; we've stuffed them in her existing shoes for about as long as we can. When their toes start curling under it's a good bet they need bigger shoes! (NO, that's not the case here, I'm just saying,,,)

I guess today isn't going to be one of those days I get to lounge around in pj's all day, eating bon bons and drinking wine; yeah right, we all have at least one of those days a week, huh?

Emergency Stash

I've started working on my goals for this year!! Hurray!

Right now we have one year's worth of hand soap in reserve as well as a year's supply of uncooked rice (that is IF we have something more than rice to eat!).

We at least will have clean hands when we eat our daily bowl of rice!

I was sorta half joking when I made that goal, but in reality it's not a bad idea, especially this time of year in the North, to have reserves.  I know we try to keep gasoline on hand (both in cans and keeping the car tanks full) in case the electric goes out so we can run the generator.  Living in the country is nice, but when you have to get water from a well, you need electric to pump it out!

Which brings another idea to mind.  We had an old hand pump around here, I wonder what we did with it?  Might not be a bad idea to locate that thing,,,,,,,

Get Your Motor Runnin'

I'm not sure what the 10-year-old had in mind with this prank (although he denies having anything to do with it,,,sure, I believe that one!), but if one steps into the shower still half asleep, it probably would get your motor runnin' all right!  

Queen of Hearts

Left to their own devices, without Wii's or Nintendo's, CD's or MP3 players, kids still do have the ability to imagine all sorts of things.

Given construction paper, 5,000 staples (+or - a few), blankets and nylon net, they can be transformed into a 10-year-old King, the 5-year-old Queen of Hearts and the 9-year-old Princess, reigning over the Kingdom of the Fireplace!

Viva la Imagination!

Looking Back at 2008
