New Year's Traditions
Many families have New Year traditional meals, depending on where you live to what your religion is, which we prepare to make sure we have good luck in the coming year.
Not all of us are as lucky as Dash, who has a mother-in-law delivering turnip greens and purple hull peas to prepare a feast with!!
One tradition in our family has been pork and cabbage with a side dish of black-eyed peas. While this recipe doesn't include the black-eyed peas, it does have everything else in one tasty dish.
Sausage and Cabbage Casserole
- 1 head of cabbage, sliced
- 1 yellow onion, chopped
- 4~6 large potatoes, pealed and cut into rounds
- 1 pound smoked sausage
- Cavender's Greek Seasoning
- 1 stick butter
Start by slicing up a head of cabbage and chopping one yellow onion. Peel and slice the potatoes into rounds. Next, slice a pound of smoked sausage into it and stir in a stick of melted butter. Season well with Cavender's GreekSeasoning and put it all in a large casserole dish. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for about an hour and a half. When your potatoes are soft and your cabbage is cooked like you like it, it's ready!
If you can't find Cavender's Greek Seasoning in your area (or don't have any on hand) you can make up your own by combining:
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon beef-flavored boullion granules
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Store this is a sealed container to use the next time you make this dish (and I know you will!)

That sounds great! Hope y'all have a happy new year up in the north country.

Here's to a happy new year down your way, too! We're expecting snow and a high of about 16 degrees to usher in the new year here.

I love sausage and I love cabbage! This recipe looks simple and sounds very flavorful! I've never seen that spice mix before, so thanks for including the substitution.
